This is the logo that I propose needs to be updated. Where this is nothing more than an image of a big imposing Victorian school building with the school name in Comic Sans, I think a more suitable design would be more fun, modern, inspiring and upbeat.
These are a selection of logos that capture the mood and feel of the type of logo that would work well.
I like the feel of these logos. The animal approach might work well – doesn’t have to relate to anything just could become a school mascot. Creating the animal out of origami or just having an abstract shape made in this way might be a good tactile approach. Using bright colours is likely work, possibly fading into each other. I’d also like to avoid the old fashioned school shield and go for a more globular shape. Something with rounded edges should give the impression of a thought cloud or something that can be moulded to any size or shape.
Here are some early ideas using circles and sunrise/sunbeam type imagery. The school is not a religious school despite its name so there is a risk that some of these early logos feel slightly evangelical.
This is a further logo using the origami idea. I chose a swan because of the school’s proximity to Queen’s Park in Brighton in which a number of swans reside. The swan is linked to water, water being a symbol of creativity, fluidity and emotion. Their magnificent wings when spread to their full extent put in mind the phrase ‘to spread your wings’ – the goal for children to find themselves. They are elegant creatures at home on land, in water and at great heights as they take flight. I have tried the Cicle typeface here which may be a bit too hard so I need to explore further. The swan has been drawn in Ilustrator following the image I found on a Google search as a guide.
An owl is another animal that lends itself well to being applied as a school mascot though perhaps it is overused and not as graceful or unexpected as the swan. Here I have made an origami owl again using Illustrator.
These are some logo styles that are fashionable at the moment though are very much of the moment and are likely to date very quickly so may not be ideal approaches for a school logo.
